Galway Cathedral Recitals Galway Cathedral Recitals was founded in 1994 to present an international series of organ recitals in Galway’s wonderful limestone cathedral each summer. Since then, it has become established among Ireland’s premier organ recital series, and the only one west of the Shannon. In the years since its foundation, GCR has presented the finest of organists from all over Europe and the USA as well as Ireland. The combination of organ and other media has always been an element of the series, and many unusual and interesting programmes have been featured. The series is also proud to have provided a platform for many young, upcoming Irish players, particularly from the Galway area. While in recent years the series has included other types of concerts, the showcasing of the magnificent Cathedral organ and the extensive organ repertoire – in a region where organ music has been relatively unknown – remains a core objective. The consistently good audience numbers, and the general public acknowledgement of the concert series as an established part of Galway's summer, points to GCR’s success in achieving that objective. The rebuilding of the Cathedral organ between January 2006 and June 2007 has left the Cathedral with what is probably the most exciting organ in the country, and has lifted these annual summer concerts to a new level of enjoyment. The additional acquisition of a new chamber organ has increased the scope for performances by ensembles of all sorts; and this scope has been extensively explored in the last couple of years.
