John Cantrell

John Edward Cantrell, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, recently received his Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance from the University of Louisville. During his years at the University, Mr. Cantrell gave several solo recitals as well as performances with the U. of L. Orchestra and Choruses. As part of an organ and trumpet duo, he has premiered works written by local composers. This fall, the duo will be guest clinicians and performers at several Universities on the west coast of the United States. A church musician since he was a boy, Mr. Cantrell is currently the organist, assistant director of music, and director of the recorder ensemble at Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville. John, also an accomplished pianist, is very active in other realms of musical performance. As a studio musician, Mr. Cantrell has toured the United States and recorded with pop and jazz music groups. In the fall of 1997, John, along with an ensemble created for the sole purpose of performing 20th century music, was invited to participate in the “Meer den Worten” festival in Holland. While there, they premiered works by Louisville composers and collaborated with other musicians and writers from Europe and also the United States. Outside of his duties as an organist and pianist, John performs regularly as a multi-instrumentalist with medieval and renaissance music ensembles, and also world music groups.
